I came across this Newsweek article today that lists Blake Gopnik’s 10 picks for most influential artists of our time, the artists he believes will be in the history books.
Here’s the list:
- Gillian Wearing
- Christian Marclay
- Marjetica Potrc
- Artur Zmijewski
- Tacita Dean
- Sophie Calle
- Francis Alÿs
- Jeff Wall
- Jeff Koons
- Damien Hirst
None of these are actual painters. I mean, you could say Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst have made paintings, but it’s not what I think of when I hear their names. Most of these people are photographers.
What do you think about that? The artists on the list? Who would you add?
*Edit: Am I the only one that is severly disappointed when an artist I want to know more about doesn’t have a blog or twitter? I want to know more about them and most of the time a website is only good enough for one view. I guess that’s the price we pay in this hyper-connected society.
