This is Redgy. He is my clay board experiment. I must say it’s a bit frustrating to go from the last painting to one that is in the ugly stage right from the beginning.
I have done about 3 steps to this. First is the brown one, second is the black (except eyes and nose) and third is the red and blue. I just put in the eyes and nose after the red and blue. I’m hoping that a few more layers on the rest, to darken some areas up it will look much better.
I think there’s a 50/50 shot that this will come out okay.
Everyone that I have seen use clay board makes it look so easy. LOL. I guess I’m just a paper girl.

You know, I expected a much worse painting from what you were saying, but this doesn’t look so bad. maybe just something you’d have to get used to to be able to knock it out. I’d say don’t give up on clayboard just yet…
Thanks Katie. Hopefully it will be fabulous when I finish. If not there’s always paper.
“I dont know that claybord will take the paint the way you put it down. You have an immense strength in your darks and your building of tone and I cant imagine that you will be able to acheive that on claybord because it lifts so much more. BUT, you are anamazing watercolourist and you may find a new language for claybord and change the world again. Loved seeing you lat the Academy for KRISTEN’S CELEBRATION. See you soon, MBK”
*I thought this comment was originally posted here and I deleted the post it was on. I was heartbroken until I discovered the email containing the comment in my inbox. Thank you MBK! I really appreciate all the kind words you have had for me over the years.

Looks like someone broke out the sharpie. I actually like this though. You should do more on clayboard. However, maybe instead of using black, you should use a dark brown.
Interesting. Perhaps I will try it. I went really dark on this layer knowing I would go over it with more paint and it would likely pick up some of the black. I had to come at this a bit different since my usual style will not work. I thought I was done with this piece, but I may go back to it yet.
